  abstract = {The process of subduction is one of the main ways that the mantle and the Earth\&$\#$39;s surface interact. Digital or analogue models of this process have lacked detailed constraints derived from surface observables and the time-evolution of subduction has been little understood. This research has provided a user-interactive methodology for combining mantle models with observables. The results have implications for the relative importance of the upper mantle in vertical displacements of the Earth\&$\#$39;s surface. Finally, self-evolving models of subduction have been used to understand the time-evolution of the crust overriding the down-going plate.},
