@misc{9095, author = {Stuart Clark}, title = {Back-Arc Basin Formation in Southeast Asia: a Numerical Perspective}, abstract = {Southeast Asia contains the most complex tectonic plate configurations and is sandwiched between two rapidly converging plates: the Australian plate is moving northwards at about 8 cm/yr, the fastest moving of the continental plates. The Pacific plate is also moving rapidly towards this area and this combined convergence makes the region a site of numerous subduction zones: a slab burial ground. The subduction zones are in a state of flux, that is the trenches are moving sometimes backwards and sometimes forward with respect to the overriding or non-subducting plate. Presently the greatest concentration of back-arc basins in the world are located in Southeast Asia. In this presentation, we show the results of numerical models with coupled mantle and plate kinematics and discuss the implications for back-arc basin formation in convergent zones.}, year = {2012}, journal = {Asia Oceania Geosciences Society 2012 Meeting, Singapore August 13-17}, month = {August}, note = {Asia Oceania Geosciences Society 2012 Meeting, Singapore August 13-17}, }
