Cinema theaters have arrived in the digital era. For the distribution of digital films, the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) has chosen Digital Cinema Package (DCP) as encoding format for feature films. This activity is made with Utopia cinemas, a network of independent theaters. The main requirement from Utopia is to provide free and open source software for digital cinema. DCP uses JPEG2000 for video compression because of its high compression rate of large images. An efficient implementation of coding and decoding for this format is complex, however, we focus on an improved implementation of the decoding part to support the projection side in digital cinemas. Our reason is that equipment that is currently deployed in movie theaters is expensive and has a high maintenance cost, preventing small and independent theaters from deploying it. We intend to provide software solution to playback DCPs adapted to arthouse. This paper presents a solution that achieves real-time decoding and presentation based on widespread open source multimedia tools as VLC player and the libav/ffmpeg libraries. We present the improvements that were made in VLC to support DCP, which include reading files from disk and synchronizing audio and video. Then the description of the JPEG2000 decoder inside libav/ffmpeg is detailed, and finally playback performances evaluations are presented.}, year = {2013}, journal = {COmpression et REpr{\'e}sentation des Signaux Audiovisuels (CORESA 2013)}, pages = {6}, month = {November}, publisher = {Le2i - Laboratoire Electronique, Informatique et Image}, address = {http://le2i.cnrs.fr}, }
